4 tips for sending your mail internationally

There is more to sending a letter abroad than choosing the right stamps for overseas. The following four tips for sending your letter abroad can make a huge difference:

1. Write your address correctly: The address format can vary considerably from country to country. For example in some countries or regions, an address may not mention a house number, postal code or even a street name. And in countries such as the USA, Canada and Australia, the name of the state must be abbreviated with an area code after the town name. So make sure you know in advance how to write the address in the country of destination.

In addition, letters to foreign countries must also have a sender’s address or a return address. Write this in the top left corner on the front or on the back of the envelope.

2. Use indelible ink: Depending on the destination, your letter may be in transit for several weeks or even months, and sometimes in harsh conditions. For this reason, use a sturdy envelope and write the address in indelible ink.

3. Mention other contact details: Putting the recipient’s e-mail address or telephone number on the envelope can significantly increase the chances of delivery. However, do not do this if the destination is within the EU. This is prohibited since the introduction of the GDPR, the new European directive that provides stricter protection for personal data.

4. Send important mail by registered post: When sending important mail, it is advisable to send it by registered post. The issuing stamp has legal value. Registered mail can always be tracked with Track & Trace, so you know exactly where your letter is and when it was received.
