Everything you should know about franking your letters

Everything you should know about franking your letters

Correspondence in the form of letters and invoices is still very important for many businesses. Quite a few organisations still process their business correspondence by hand in a mail room, but this proves a daily challenge for their employees. Franking letters is actually a time-consuming job. That is why it is important to know how to frank your letters correctly, because if you don’t do it properly, you run the risk of your mail not being delivered to the proper address. And on top of this, it could cause additional costs.

How many stamps do you need for a domestic letter? How does the franking of a normalised letter work? And what about franking a non-normalised letter? How do you frank a letter for an address abroad? And what is priority and non-priority mail? You can read the answers to all these questions in this blog.

Correctly franking letters in Belgium: how many postage stamps to stick on your letter?

Which stamps and how many you should stick on an envelope depends on the weight, the size, the desired delivery date and the destination of your mail. If you already know the weight and size of your mail, it is easy to calculate the costs.

Sizes for a normalised letter
Sizes for a normalised letter

The size can be normalised or non-normalised.

A normalised letter:

  • is always rectangular
  • is at least 140 x 90 mm and at most 235 x 125 mm
  • weighs at most 50 g and is no thicker than 5 mm.

Any letter that deviates from these dimensions is non-normalised and then you have to pay a higher price. Franking a large envelope will thus cost more than franking a small envelope.

The overview below shows how many postage stamps you need and what the price is per postage stamp to send your mail within Belgium. The cost of your letter thus depends on the speed of the required delivery: priority mail will be delivered within 1 working day after dispatch and non-priority mail within 3 working days.

Correctly franking letters for outside Belgium: how many postage stamps should you stick on?

Different prices apply to mail being sent abroad, in which case only priority mail is available. These prices are dependent on two geographic areas: Europe and the Rest of the World.
